Tragically, he was denied his victory through political maneuvers. Like Joan of Arc, initially condemned but later vindicated, Abiola posthumously won recognition as the rightful winner of that election. Regrettably, he died in custody amid Nigeria’s internal conflicts, missing an opportunity for the nation’s greatness. Known for his industriousness, commitment, and patriotism, Abiola’s national mobilization led even his harshest critics to support him when his victory was unjustly denied.

Reflecting on his aspirations for a new Nigeria, Abiola foresaw the power of modern communication, which could have thwarted the military regime’s attempt to suppress the truth. As Nigerians commemorate Abiola’s legacy today, his profound words on various issues—economy, patriotism, sports, and governance—continue to resonate, reminding us of his enduring impact on history.
