The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a major drug cartel responsible for the production and distribution of methamphetamine, known locally as ‘mkpuru mmiri’. According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the successful operation was initiated following the arrest of 42-year-old Joachin Chikaodi Mbonu, the leader of the syndicate, and his associate at his mansion in Umuomi village, Uzogba-Ezenomi autonomous community, Ikeduru local government area of Imo State…… CONTINUE READING
Babafemi stated, “The cartel, which operated bases in Imo and Rivers states, was targeted by the agency due to intelligence indicating its significant role in distributing methamphetamine across the South East, South South, and other parts of Nigeria.”
“After weeks of surveillance, NDLEA’s special operations unit conducted a raid on July 5th, 2024, apprehending Mbonu and his associate Kenneth Chibuike Ofoegbu, 34. They seized various quantities of methamphetamine, precursor chemicals, a pump action gun, and cartridges.”
“Recovered exhibits from the operation included 419.99 grams of methamphetamine, 750 grams of iodine (a meth precursor), 500 grams of sodium bicarbonate (another meth precursor), two electronic weighing scales, and a pump action gun with four cartridges.”
“The operation extended to Mbonu’s hideout at 11 Redemption Avenue, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where additional exhibits were recovered: 750 grams of processed sodium bicarbonate, 170 grams of plain sodium bicarbonate, and 75 grams of meth.”
“Another raid at the residence of Mbonu’s associate, Odoemenam Pedro Chinedu, who is currently at large in Njaba LGA, Imo State, resulted in the discovery of a pump action gun with 25 cartridges among other items.”
“While Mbonu is in custody, NDLEA has identified two of his mansions in Imo State for potential forfeiture to the federal government.”
“Mbonu had previously evaded authorities in South Africa, where he honed his skills in methamphetamine production before relocating to Nigeria.”
Commenting on the operation, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) praised the officers involved, emphasizing that the decisive action should serve as a warning to other drug cartels across the country.
