ASUP Denies Approval For NBTE’s New Service Scheme

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) has strongly criticized the recent service scheme introduced by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), citing grave concerns over its potential impact on the nation’s economy and the polytechnic education sector. ASUP leaders, including Adebayo Daramola, Ade Arikawe, Ademola Adewumi, Dr. Kayode Sule, Victor Oluwatuyi, and Dr. M.I Atilola, emphasized their support for the national body’s ultimatum to NBTE, demanding a suspension of the scheme within 15 days to allow for revisions. They highlighted several contentious issues, such as extended career progression timelines and mandatory qualifications that they believe unfairly favor Bachelor’s degree holders over Higher National Diploma (HND) holders.

According to ASUP FPA Chairman Daramola, “The scheme poses significant threats to the existence of the polytechnic system and the professional growth of its academic staff. We oppose its discriminatory provisions and urge the government to prioritize the sector’s interests to avoid stifling our nation’s productive capabilities.”

Zonal Coordinator Adekunle Masopa echoed these sentiments, urging NBTE to heed stakeholders’ concerns and suspend the scheme pending necessary amendments. Masopa criticized the approval process, arguing that it lacked adequate consultation with affected parties, including governing councils of polytechnics.
