Prof. Yakubu underscored that INEC is equipped to conduct local government elections effectively if the legal framework is amended to assign this role to the commission. He cited INEC’s successful management of area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which have avoided typical challenges associated with state-run local government elections.

Yakubu outlined several advantages of INEC overseeing these elections, such as ensuring election regularity, stability of tenure, and eliminating the need for caretaker committees often seen in state-run processes. He highlighted INEC’s impartiality in the FCT elections, which has prevented any single political party from monopolizing all seats, unlike in certain states.

The chairman stressed that transferring responsibility for local government elections to INEC would enhance democratic practices in Nigeria but emphasized that this shift would necessitate constitutional amendments to move this duty from state electoral commissions to INEC.
