The protest, which began peacefully in the morning, escalated into violence as the day progressed. Initially, protesters, predominantly street urchins and criminals, blocked and harassed motorists on the service lanes of the ten-lane highway. They eventually extended their actions to the main road, creating bonfires, blocking traffic, and extorting money from drivers.
Ignoring the presence of police and civil defense personnel, the protesters attacked motorists and passersby who refused to comply with their demands. Those who did not pay were beaten.
In response, the military was alerted and quickly dispatched troops and armored trucks to secure the highway. The military cut off access at the Katampe roundabout with armored vehicles to control traffic flow and positioned additional trucks and personnel at strategic locations to disperse the crowd.
However, the troops faced challenges in clearing the road of large stones, tree trunks, and burned tires that the protesters had used to obstruct traffic before the military’s arrival.
