The initially peaceful protest turned violent in some areas, leading to clashes with security forces, who used tear gas on the protesters.
According to Bauchi’s Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Muhammad, the arrests were made due to breaches of public order and illegal assembly. He stated that 52 protesters were detained for violent and disorderly behavior, disrupting public peace despite prior arrangements.
CP Muhammad also reported that one police officer was injured during the unrest, which included theft and vandalism. The protesters, numbering over 3,000, regrouped after being dispersed and attempted to advance toward the Government House.
“The protesters threw stones at our officers, injuring some of them. We acted swiftly to restore order. The governor would have addressed them if they had not become unruly,” he said. “We acted professionally and did not cause any fatalities. The protesters used women and children as shields, but we managed to control the situation.
