In his response on Sunday, Okupe highlighted that President Tinubu had achieved more in one year than previous administrations. He commended Tinubu’s speech for openly acknowledging the severe economic situation inherited by his administration and for outlining efforts to reduce the crippling debt servicing ratio from 97% to 68% of earned revenue.

Okupe argued that removing the fuel subsidy was necessary for the government to function without resorting to excessive borrowing. He also noted the administration’s significant progress in just 14 months, despite inheriting severe financial and socio-economic difficulties. Tinubu’s commitment to lowering living costs and food inflation through measures such as increased food imports and tax reductions was particularly praised.

Okupe, who previously served as a media aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, urged Nigerians to hold governors and local government officials accountable, given the increased funds allocated to states and local governments by the current administration. He emphasized that federal revenue distribution favors states and local governments, with 49% going to the federal government and approximately 48% to sub-national entities.
