A valedictory service in Ariwoola’s honor is scheduled for August, celebrating his tenure as the head of Nigeria’s judiciary.
If Justice Kekere-Ekun assumes the role of Chief Justice as expected, she will become the second female to hold the position, following Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, who served as CJN from July 2012 to November 2014.
At 66, Kekere-Ekun is the most senior Supreme Court Justice after Ariwoola and is highly favored for the role. Her appointment would not only make her the next CJN but also the head of the National Judicial Council (NJC), responsible for the appointment, promotion, and discipline of judges across Nigeria.

She became a High Court judge on July 19, 1996, and served as Chairman of the Robbery and Firearms Tribunal, Zone II, Ikeja from November 1996 to May 1999.
She was promoted to the Court of Appeal on September 22, 2004, where she served as presiding justice in various divisions and held leadership roles in the Makurdi and Akure Divisions.
Elevated to the Supreme Court as its fifth female justice on July 8, 2013, Kekere-Ekun has attended numerous international and domestic seminars and received various merit awards. She is a life Bencher and president of the International Association of Women Judges.
