The issue of lawmakers’ pay resurfaced following remarks by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who suggested that legislators set their own salaries. Although the National Assembly refuted Obasanjo’s comments, Kawu, in a BBC Hausa Service interview, claimed a monthly salary of N21 million. He later clarified that his actual salary, after deductions, amounts to just over N600,000.
Adaramodu responded, emphasizing that these claims are baseless. He explained that the salaries and allowances of senators are set by the Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMFAC), not the figures Kawu mentioned.
Adaramodu further clarified that the funds Kawu referred to are not personal salaries or allowances but are used for the operational costs of senators’ offices, including staff salaries, oversight functions, and community outreach. These funds are allocated annually and must be accounted for with proof of expenditure. The National Assembly’s budget, representing about 1% of the federal budget, has remained stable even during financial challenges.
The Senate, according to Adaramodu, is composed of dedicated professionals committed to public service, not motivated by financial gain.
