The controversy surrounding the pay of National Assembly members was reignited following reports that some lawmakers set their own salaries during a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. This claim led to widespread public concern.
The Senate has since denied that its members determine their own pay or receive substantial sums. According to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, each senator is entitled to a monthly salary and allowances totaling N1.063 million. Efekoro, however, dismissed this explanation as mere formalities.
He stated, “The former senator who made these allegations knows the actual figures, and even the Commission’s breakdown is just a formality.” Efekoro criticized the Nigerian government and politicians for placing undue pressure on citizens, suggesting that while Nigerians may seem passive, they do not forget grievances.
Efekoro also urged Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration in addressing national challenges and warned Senate President Godswill Akpabio against intimidating senators who seek to hold the president accountable. He expressed faith in Tinubu’s administration but called for transparency regarding the economic impact of subsidy removal and the government’s plans for economic recovery.
The lawmaker concluded by urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and informed, as the administration must communicate its strategies and achievements to prevent potential unrest.
