During an emergency general meeting on Monday, the NMA issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Dr. Ezeh’s release, threatening to withdraw their services statewide if their demands are not met. Dr. Ezeh, a private practitioner based in Ihiala, was abducted from his residence in Umunnamehi Village on August 15.
In a statement signed by Dr. Princeton Okam and Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi, chairman and secretary respectively, the NMA condemned the increasing incidents of kidnapping and insecurity in the state. They urged the government and security agencies to address the situation urgently.
The statement detailed that Dr. Ezeh, who is the Managing Director of Vera Clinic in Ihiala, was seized in front of his home. Initially, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of 40 million naira, which they later reduced to 30 million naira. The NMA has given the Anambra State Government a 48-hour deadline to secure Dr. Ezeh’s release.
“If Dr. Ezeh is not released by the end of this ultimatum, all doctors in Anambra State will go on strike until his release is achieved. An emergency meeting will be held within the next 48 hours to assess the situation,” the statement said.
The NMA also expressed gratitude to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his administration’s efforts to improve the health sector but called for urgent measures to address the insecurity and other challenges in the state.
The association urged its members to continue delivering quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare to the people of Anambra.
