Shaibu had been controversially impeached on April 8 by the Edo State House of Assembly, which accused him of perjury and leaking government secrets. However, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court ruled that the impeachment process lacked due process and ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement.

In its ruling, the Court of Appeal warned against anyone other than Shaibu attempting to claim the position of Deputy Governor, stating that legal action would be taken against such individuals. The court also invalidated the appointment of Omobayo Godwins, who had been designated as Shaibu’s replacement.

Furthermore, the court directed the Inspector General of Police to ensure Shaibu’s security as he resumes his duties until the end of his term. This decision has heightened political tensions in Edo State, reflecting ongoing internal conflicts within the state’s leadership.
