Despite the pressure, Jonathan is constitutionally barred from running for president again due to a 2018 amendment to the Nigerian Constitution. This amendment, which was signed into law by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, limits any individual who has served as Vice President or Deputy Governor and succeeded their principal to only one more term in the same office.
The specific amendment, known as the Constitution Amendment Act Number 16, stipulates that no one who has taken the oath of office as President or Governor more than once can contest for that office again. Jonathan, who completed the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s term and then won the 2011 presidential election, also ran in 2015 but lost to Buhari.
As a result of this constitutional provision, Jonathan is not eligible to run for the presidency in 2027, despite the calls from Northern political figures looking for an alternative to the current administration’s policies.
