The advocacy group Women For Change stated on August 24 that Hadebe, who had recently begun transitioning, identified as a trans woman. Local media reports reveal that Hadebe, originally from KwaZulu-Natal province, had been at a popular outing spot in Johannesburg on the night of August 9 with a friend. They interacted with a male shooter who showed particular interest in Hadebe. Despite his friend’s advice to disclose his identity as a gay crossdresser, Hadebe chose not to.

After deciding to leave with the shooter, Hadebe’s friend was dropped off, and Hadebe and the shooter were left alone. The murder is suspected to be premeditated, and some locals have blamed Hadebe for not disclosing his gender identity.

Sibonelo Ncanana, civil society engagement officer for OUT LGBT Well-being, condemned the murder and the subsequent queerphobic victim-blaming. “Victim-blaming is never acceptable,” Ncanana said. “The idea that LGBTIQ+ individuals must disclose their identity to be safe is deeply troubling. Our identity should not be subject to anyone’s approval.”

Ncanana emphasized that OUT LGBT Well-being will monitor the investigation closely and called for justice for Hadebe. Mohale Motaung, a prominent LGBTQ activist, added, “Clement Hadebe’s tragic death underscores that self-disclosure should always be a personal choice, not a requirement for safety or acceptance.”

Despite South Africa being the only African country that legally recognizes LGBTQ rights, cultural and religious beliefs often result in widespread opposition to these rights.
