Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, made this known in a statement.
“In response to the recent surge in terrorist activities targeting innocent civilians in Niger State, the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch has intensified efforts to track, locate, and eliminate the terrorists responsible,” the statement said.
The intelligence revealed that many of the terrorists involved in recent attacks, abductions, and cattle rustling in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State were based in Kaduna State. After troops spotted the terrorists in Malum forest in Kaduna, the Air Component launched an Air Interdiction Mission against their stronghold.
“Battle damage assessments and feedback from local sources indicated that several terrorists were eliminated during the strike,” the statement continued.
Similar airstrikes were conducted on terrorist hideouts in Bayan Ruwa, located in the Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The terrorists were tracked to zinc-roofed structures in a vegetated area with limited footpaths and a river line to the northwest. “The targets were acquired and engaged in successive passes,” the statement noted.
In the Niger Delta region, patrols carried out by the air component of Operation Delta Safe over Ohaji/Egbema in Imo State, and Degema and Cawthorne Channel in Rivers State, led to the discovery and destruction of several illegal refining sites and overhead tanks.
“In total, over 25 illegal sites were destroyed,” the statement added. “In Greenville, Rivers State, a leaking pipeline was observed, with the leakage spreading across a radius of over 150 meters, causing significant damage to vegetation, aquatic habitats, and farmlands.
