The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State has issued a warning to motorists against transporting petrol in jerrycans while traveling, citing the risk of fire disasters. Dr. Ibitoye highlighted that some motorists, due to the scarcity of petrol, have resorted to carrying the fuel in jerrycans during their journeys. He warned that this practice is highly dangerous.
He recounted an incident on Sunday where the command apprehended a fully-loaded commercial bus carrying three jerrycans, each containing 25 liters of petrol. The bus had departed from Lagos State and was headed to Jalingo in Taraba. Although the command ensured the driver filled the vehicle’s tank before continuing the journey, Dr. Ibitoye noted that road safety laws prevent the FRSC from impounding such vehicles.
The sector commander praised the passengers for raising the alarm and contacting the FRSC national headquarters, which led to alerts being sent to all state commands. He encouraged passengers to actively participate in road traffic management and efforts to reduce accidents.
“As a passenger in a vehicle, you should be involved in road traffic management and not distract the driver. You should contribute to road safety,” Dr. Ibitoye said. He emphasized the importance of passengers discouraging drivers from transporting fuel in jerrycans, pointing out that even a small spark could result in a deadly fire.
“It is better to wait in line for fuel than to buy it in a jerrycan and risk an explosion that could burn everyone in the vehicle to ashes,” he continued. “We urge all Nigerians facing fuel challenges not to transport fuel in jerrycans within their vehicles, as this not only endangers their lives but also poses a risk to other road users.”
Dr. Ibitoye reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to educating motorists on practices that prevent road crashes and ensure the safety of all road users.
