The explosives were uncovered in Galadima-Kogo within Shiroro Local Government Area, Mutun-Daya in Munya LGA, and the Gbeganu Area of Minna. Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun stated that these findings are the result of counter-insurgency efforts conducted between 2021 and 2023, involving collaboration between the police and other security agencies.
On August 22, 2024, the explosives were safely neutralized behind Zuma Rock in Suleja, under the supervision of SP Mohammed Mamun, the Officer in Charge of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit.
Abiodun detailed that the neutralized items included:
– Four pipe-borne IEDs from Galadima-Kogo, recovered on September 27, 2021.
– Explosives concealed in suspected military missile shells and a 5kg cooking gas cylinder from Mutun-Daya, recovered on February 11, 2022.
– Explosives in a 10-litre jerrycan, three suspected military hand grenades, and an improvised bow-shaped material from Gbeganu, Minna, recovered on October 24, 2023.
The destruction of these devices is part of ongoing efforts to enhance security in Niger State, following recent violent incidents including the killing of 13 farmers by suspected bandits and a previous bomb explosion in Galadima-Kogo in 2022, which resulted in the deaths of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps officers.
