Durov, 39, was apprehended at Le Bourget airport near Paris on Saturday evening. His initial detention has been extended multiple times, now lasting up to 96 hours. He is under investigation for 12 alleged offences concerning the management of extremist content on Telegram, part of a probe that began confidentially on July 8.
Having founded Telegram while leaving Russia a decade ago, Durov has seen the platform grow to over 900 million users. Known for his reclusive nature, he holds citizenship in Russia, France, and the UAE, where Telegram’s headquarters are located. Forbes estimates his net worth at $15.5 billion, though he leads a notably ascetic lifestyle, including practices such as ice baths and abstaining from alcohol and coffee.
The circumstances surrounding Durov’s arrest, including his decision to travel to Paris despite an outstanding warrant, have raised many questions. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the arrest was part of an ongoing judicial investigation and not a political maneuver, emphasizing that it is a matter for the judges to decide.
In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called for serious evidence to support the charges, warning that insufficient evidence could be seen as an attempt to restrict communication freedoms and intimidate a major company leader. The UAE has requested consular access and is closely monitoring the situation.
Support for Durov has come from various quarters, including tech mogul Elon Musk, who has voiced his backing using the hashtag #FreePavel.
