Olukoyede made these remarks during a panel discussion on money laundering at the 64th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos on Tuesday. He underscored that while the EFCC respects international conventions, it operates independently and focuses on tracing the proceeds of crime. If such funds are traced to a lawyer’s payment, the agency will take legal action against the lawyer.

He stated, “Lawyers hold a position of trust, and while international laws are important, it is crucial to uphold the integrity of our profession. Ensuring that payments come from legitimate sources protects both the profession and the legal system.”

Olukoyede further explained that adherence to proper financial practices is essential for maintaining the sanctity of the legal profession. “It is important to know your client and ensure your payment is not derived from illicit activities. If we trace criminal proceeds to you, we will question you, and you are expected to cooperate.”

He added, “Understanding your role in preventing and addressing crimes helps determine your level of involvement. We are not saying lawyers cannot be paid, but the source of the payment must be clean and lawful.”
