The shooting occurred on August 22, 2024, during festivities following the election of new leaders for the Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney, a group responsible for managing land in the region and addressing issues related to land ownership and illegal sales. The election saw a supporter of Ununu win a significant position, leading to widespread celebration.
During the celebration, Ununu, who serves as the group’s counsel, reportedly discharged his firearm, accidentally hitting Ugo in the mouth. Ugo was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries on August 23.
A local source claimed that financial assistance was promised to Ugo’s distant relatives for his burial, as his parents are deceased.
DSP Joshua Ukandu, spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed that Ununu has been detained. “I am aware of the situation and he is currently in our custody. However, I am not familiar with all the details of the case,” Ukandu said.
