The UK Home Office reported that the four were involved in an organized crime syndicate responsible for submitting fraudulent EU Settlement Scheme applications for Nigerian nationals. Their operations, which took place between March 2019 and May 2023, also included providing fake Nigerian Customary Marriage Certificates and other documents to help clients, mostly Nigerians, stay in the UK.

An investigation by the Home Office in the UK and Lagos uncovered that the group had produced over 2,000 fake marriage documents before their arrest.

Onifade, from Gravesend in Kent, and Shodipo, from Manchester, were convicted of conspiracy to facilitate illegal entry and conspiracy to supply fraudulently used articles. Onifade was sentenced to six years in prison, while Shodipo received a five-year term.

Gbadamosi, from Bolton, was found guilty of obtaining leave to remain through deception and fraud by false representation, and was sentenced to six years in prison.

Kabir, from London, was convicted of possessing an identity document with improper intent but was acquitted of obtaining leave to remain by deception. He was sentenced to nine months in jail.

Paul Moran, Chief Immigration Officer at the Home Office, stated, “This group was highly active in abusing our borders and has been rightfully brought to justice. Their primary motive was financial gain. I am pleased that our team was able to disrupt their operation, and I hope these convictions serve as a warning to other gangs exploiting people’s desperation to remain in the UK. We remain committed to securing our borders and cracking down on such criminal activities.”
