Joy In Abia State Polytechnic As Governor Clears Long-standing Salary Arrears (Videos)
On Friday, September 13, 2024, staff of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, were overwhelmed with joy as their long-awaited salary arrears were finally paid.
This comes after the Abia State government, in June 2024, announced plans to gradually clear the N16.5 billion salary arrears owed to employees of state-owned higher education institutions by the previous administration.
The Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Mike Akpara, revealed this during a press briefing in Umuahia, where he assured that the government was committed to paying off the arrears in phases. He also mentioned that other civil servants in the state would receive their owed salaries in batches as part of the government’s broader financial strategy.
Akpara further explained that the current administration inherited a debt burden of N16.5 billion in unpaid wages for workers in state institutions. However, he emphasized that the government was determined to settle these debts without compromising the progress of other vital sectors.
On Friday, the first group of polytechnic staff received their arrears, sparking celebrations. A video shared online captures the emotional moment, showing staff kneeling in gratitude and offering prayers for the governor.
