Speaking on Saturday at the 85th Anniversary Celebration of the First Baptist Church in Surulere, Ilorin, Kwara State, Sulu-Gambari, represented by Oba Oluwagbemiga Oloyede, Olusin of Isanlu-Isin, highlighted the need for unity and prayers amidst the country’s economic difficulties. He called on both Christian and Muslim communities to fervently pray for divine intervention to restore the nation’s former economic prosperity.
The Emir praised the harmonious relationship between the Christian and Muslim communities in Kwara State, emphasizing that this unity contributes to the state’s reputation as the “State of Harmony.” He encouraged continued cooperation between religious groups and adherence to peaceful practices.
In his sermon, Reverend Israel Akanji, President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, urged Christians to diligently worship God and use their time wisely to secure a place in heaven. He described the church as a gateway to heaven and a center for miracles, reflecting on biblical passages from Luke 16:19-31 and Acts 12:5-19.
The First Baptist Church, founded in March 1939, marked its 85th anniversary by launching an N85 million fundraising initiative to purchase a new church bus. Notable attendees included Oba Oluwagbemiga Oloyede, Oba Adebayo Lawal, and High Chief Oluwayemisi Ogundare, representing the Soun of Ogbomoso land.
