In a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms on Monday over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Borno states. Thunderstorms are also expected later in the day across Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto states.
The report stated: “Morning thunderstorms are anticipated over the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, and Kwara states. Isolated thunderstorms are also expected in these regions during the afternoon and evening.”
Additionally, rains are forecasted in the southwestern inland areas, including Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ogun, extending to coastal states such as Lagos, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa during the morning hours. In the later hours, thunderstorms are expected in Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Osun, and other parts of the southwest.
NiMet further advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas due to the likelihood of urban flooding from heavy rainfall. Strong winds may precede the thunderstorms, and the public is urged to take safety precautions.
The agency also called on the public and airline operators to stay updated on weather conditions for effective planning, recommending that people visit NiMet’s website for detailed weather reports.
