This advocacy took place during a one-day stakeholder meeting in Abakaliki, aimed at promoting the bill alongside other gender-responsive legislation, electoral reforms, and a roadmap for women leading up to the 2027 general elections. The event, held at Cirenes Hotel, brought together participants from diverse sectors, including civil society organizations, political leaders, human rights advocates, political appointees, media representatives, and officials from the state Ministry of Women Affairs and UN Women.
Prof. Mariam Mustapha from the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies emphasized that the proposed law would ensure equal opportunities for all individuals and prohibit gender-based discrimination in Ebonyi State. She noted that the bill comprises seven parts and 46 sections, designed to protect all members of society—fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, and wives—from abuse, violence, and discrimination, allowing them to fully enjoy their rights in education and decision-making.
Additionally, Mrs. Stella Okechukwu Kalu highlighted the initiatives of the UN Women Political Participation Partners Working Group in Ebonyi State, which collaborates with various political entities and stakeholders to promote women’s political engagement. She praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for his gender-sensitive administration, noting that many women hold significant elective and political positions. Okechukwu Kalu also mentioned the group’s efforts in community outreach, capacity building for women, and enhancing their political voice.
