Dr. Babagana Kundi-Machina, the Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Board, announced the development during the launch of a campaign against the disease in Machina, a border LGA with Niger Republic, on Saturday. He stated that the government, in collaboration with its partners, has initiated a statewide outbreak response and vaccination campaign to tackle the situation.

“It is unfortunate that after being certified polio-free for three years, we are now facing an outbreak of circulating polio virus in Bursari, Machina, and Yusufari LGAs,” Kundi-Machina noted.

Dr. Hamisu Alhassan, the State Coordinator of the World Health Organization (WHO), expressed the organization’s commitment to supporting Yobe in its efforts to control the outbreak. He urged the public to adopt preventive measures such as maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, hand washing, and ensuring immunization to enhance immunity, particularly among women and children.

Additionally, Alhaji Bashir Machinama, the Emir of Machina, encouraged his community to cooperate with the government and accept the vaccine. He expressed gratitude to the State Government for its swift response and pledged to raise awareness in his community to take necessary actions to contain the disease.
