Tensions between Fubara and Wike have escalated over control of Rivers State. Wike, from Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor, recently accused Fubara of betraying those who helped him rise to power. At a reception hosted by the Ijaw Peoples Assembly in Port Harcourt, Wike warned that he would soon teach Fubara and his allies a hard lesson in politics.
Wike boasted, “We have defeated them severally, and when the time comes, we will defeat them again. We haven’t started politics yet, but when we do, we will show them what politics is.”
However, Fubara didn’t hold back in his response. Speaking during an inter-denominational Thanksgiving Service marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Port Harcourt, Fubara countered Wike’s remarks by highlighting his achievements in office.
“They say they don’t know what I’m doing? Let me remind them. It was me, Fubara, who signed the N200 billion loan for the construction of the Port Harcourt Ring Road. It’s my project. I awarded the Trans-Kalabari Road that they couldn’t finish. They only built a bridge, but I’m completing the entire N225 billion project, without borrowing.”
Fubara then delivered a sharp jab: “I’m the one building a General Hospital, and yes, I included a Psychiatric Hospital because they’ll need it very soon. What I’ve achieved in one year is what they couldn’t do in eight.”
He also emphasized his commitment to the people of Rivers State, saying, “I don’t have any business interest. Whatever I’m doing is for the benefit of Rivers State. We won’t take any decisions we can’t defend, nor be part of anything that would disgrace our state. This state is our pride.”
Fubara urged his opponents to recognize God’s grace on his life, suggesting they will continue to struggle for relevance if they challenge him. He added that his administration’s projects are not for show, but will be completed and put to use for the people.
“They didn’t believe we’d get this far,” Fubara said, addressing his political rivals. “But we will continue to safeguard what God has given us and work for the betterment of Rivers State.”
