Defence Minister Accuses Amaechi Of Capitalizing On Citizens’ Suffering For Political AdvantageMinister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has criticized former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, accusing him of inciting unrest and exacerbating tensions among the Nigerian public.

In an interview with Igbere TV, Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, expressed disappointment over the lack of proactive responses from citizens, particularly the youth, regarding the rising cost of living. He anticipated a wave of protests from young people demanding action against the deteriorating economic conditions.

In response, a statement from the Ministry of Defence, issued by spokesperson Henshaw Ogubike, quoted Dr. Matawalle warning Amaechi against making “inflammatory remarks” that could jeopardize the nation’s peace and stability.

Matawalle remarked, “It is both reckless and irresponsible for a former public servant of Amaechi’s stature to incite Nigerians against their own government. At a time when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working diligently to tackle the challenges facing the nation through various reforms that are already showing positive results, it is absurd and shameful for anyone to exploit the genuine hardships of our citizens for selfish political gain.”

Reaffirming President Tinubu’s commitment to maintaining national peace and security, Matawalle cautioned that the government would not tolerate any attempts to destabilize the country through incitement. “We will not permit anyone to fuel violence or manipulate the prevailing situation of our people. Let this serve as a final warning to Amaechi and his cohorts,” he stated.

Matawalle also urged Amaechi to abandon divisive rhetoric and collaborate with the government to advance Nigeria’s progress. “It is expected that Amaechi would join hands with the government to move the country forward, but he has chosen to stand aside with myopic assertions,” he concluded.
