In a statement released on Monday, the PDP expressed concern that the wage announcement, made during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign event, was disrespectful to the state’s civil servants. Ayo Fadaka, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity for the PDP Campaign Organisation, questioned the timing of the announcement and urged citizens not to be deceived.
The PDP’s statement read, “It is disrespectful to announce the new minimum wage for the dignified workers of Ondo State during an electioneering event, politicizing their welfare for political gain. This promise is viewed as a ploy to mislead civil servants into voting for him.”
The statement further noted, “The timing is poorly conceived, and civil servants remember past deceptions. They won’t be fooled again.”
In response, Governor Aiyedatiwa defended his announcement, urging the PDP not to exploit workers’ welfare for political gain. His Special Assistant on New Media, Sunday Abire, stated that Aiyedatiwa stands by his commitment to the new minimum wage and criticized the PDP for questioning his sincerity.
“Aiyedatiwa did not announce the ₦73,000 minimum wage for political points. It’s a shame the PDP doesn’t recognize the proper procedures for implementing such policies. Workers in Ondo State appreciate the governor’s support and will continue to back him,” the statement concluded, asserting that the new wage is part of a positive change under Aiyedatiwa’s leadership.
