In 2024, the laureates recognized have made significant contributions to humanity, fostering knowledge and innovation. This year’s winners have pushed scientific boundaries, enhanced our understanding of the world, and driven social change, according to the organizing body.
The announcement of the 2024 Nobel Prizes began on October 7 and continued daily until October 11, with the final award for Economics presented today.
Anders Olsson, Chair of the Nobel Committee from The Swedish Academy, revealed the winners on the official website. Here’s a summary of the 2024 Nobel Prize recipients and their groundbreaking work:
Physics:
The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton for their foundational discoveries in machine learning through artificial neural networks. Hopfield developed associative memory, enabling the storage and reconstruction of images and patterns. Hinton’s work allows machines to autonomously identify features within data.
Chemistry:
The Chemistry prize recognized David Baker for his pioneering computational protein design, alongside Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper for their advancements in protein structure prediction. Baker’s innovative proteins have applications in pharmaceuticals and nanotechnology, while Hassabis and Jumper’s AlphaFold2 model solved a longstanding problem in biology, predicting the 3D structures of proteins from amino acid sequences.
Physiology or Medicine:
Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of microRNA’s role in gene regulation. Their research revealed how these tiny RNA molecules are crucial for the development and functioning of multicellular organisms, including humans, by controlling gene activity.
Literature:
The 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to South Korean author Han Kang for her “intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”
This year’s laureates exemplify the spirit of the Nobel Prizes, advancing science, literature, and humanitarian efforts globally.
