During a meeting with stakeholders in Abuja, Mamman emphasized that under the new framework, basic school pupils will be required to acquire at least two skills. He also stated that private primary schools must adopt this curriculum, with plans for an updated secondary school curriculum to be ready by September 2025.
Mamman explained, “Our goal is for students to graduate with a minimum of two skills, enabling them to lead productive lives. This curriculum is based on the National Skills Framework, which has already been approved.”
He highlighted that this initiative will affect all schools in Nigeria—both public and private—without exception. The implementation process is set to begin in January, although full execution may take time as schools prepare by acquiring necessary resources and training.
To support this rollout, the Ministry of Education is focusing on equipping teachers and preparing classrooms. The minister plans to engage with stakeholders in private schools to ensure successful implementation.
Mamman noted the curriculum aims to make formal education more appealing to parents and students. “Many parents hesitate to send their children to school due to the perceived lack of value in education. This new approach will change that, showing tangible benefits to families,” he stated.
The Director of the Curriculum Development Centre, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, expressed optimism about the curriculum, highlighting that past efforts to introduce a new framework over the last 12 years had been unsuccessful. He remarked, “This curriculum will be among the best in Africa, emphasizing skills that align with global standards, including a focus on STEM education and digital literacy.
