Nigerian Motorists In Delta Raise Alarm Over Police Exploitation During Motor Registry ProcessThe Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) has filed a lawsuit against Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun regarding the implementation of the electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) for vehicle owners across Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Motorists, particularly in Delta State, have voiced their concerns, alleging that police officers are exploiting the new e-CMR system to extort money from the public. Following the e-CMR’s launch in December 2023, NBA-SPIDEL’s leadership characterized the issuance of the certificates as illegal in a letter dated January 29, 2024, demanding the Inspector General cease its distribution within seven days.
The letter emphasized that any certificate issued without legal backing is “outright illegal, null, and void.” Although the police suspended the e-CMR issuance, reports indicate that enforcement may have quietly resumed.
Recently, the police promoted the e-CMR on social media, encouraging the public to register, while motorists on the East-West Road reported alarming extortion practices at checkpoints. One motorist, identified only as Francis, claimed he was forced to pay N50,000 when he couldn’t provide the e-CMR. Another victim, a medical doctor named Dr. Famous, reported paying N30,000 under similar circumstances.
Kehinde Prince Taiga, President of the Committee for Defence of Human Rights, raised concerns about police exploitation, urging the Inspector General to extend the registration period for the e-CMR to prevent further victimization, especially of those unfamiliar with the online process.
