Sowore confirmed to SaharaReporters that he faced delays upon his return to Nigeria on Sunday due to being placed on a watchlist. He described the immigration officers as panicked and disorganized, with officials frantically calling their superiors during the incident.
On his X account, Sowore highlighted the ongoing harassment he endures from the Nigerian Immigration Service, stating, āThey continue to subject me to unwarranted harassment and abuse⦠claiming I am placed on their WATCHLIST! #RevolutionNow.ā Although he was initially delayed, he was eventually allowed to continue his journey.
Sowore sees this harassment as part of a broader effort by the Nigerian government to intimidate him for his activism. As the publisher of SaharaReporters and a leader of the #RevolutionNow movement, he has consistently been targeted for organizing protests and criticizing government corruption.
This is not the first instance of such treatment. Earlier in September, Sowore was briefly detained upon returning from the United States, where immigration officials seized his passport before returning it later.
In light of these incidents, a leaked memo from the Department of State Services (DSS) indicated that Sowore was to be arrested upon his return to Nigeria. In response, he criticized the current administration for focusing on him while failing to address more serious security threats, like terrorism and banditry.
Sowore remains determined to continue his fight for human rights and better governance in Nigeria, stating his intent to return to the country soon despite the ongoing harassment he faces from government authorities.
