Ashiru emphasized that the NDLEA’s shortcomings have contributed significantly to the escalating rates of drug trafficking in the country. “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is corrupt and compromised; therefore, I support the creation of the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation,” he stated.

Senator Jibrin Barau, the Deputy President of the Senate who presided over the session, chose not to comment before allowing the discussion to proceed. The bill, sponsored by Senator Sani Hanga Rufai of Kano Central, aims to coordinate and promote drug awareness, prevent substance abuse, and facilitate the rehabilitation of drug users.
