In a statement on his X account on Friday, Obi expressed concern over Nigeria’s pressing domestic issues and the implications of both leaders being away at such a critical time. He noted that the two-week period President Tinubu initially mentioned for his absence has elapsed, emphasizing that the President’s return is necessary to address the nation’s challenges stemming from harsh economic policies.
“While one might argue that there is no vacancy in the presidency when both leaders are absent, it is troubling for a country facing numerous domestic problems,” Obi stated. “The President had indicated he would be gone for 14 days, and that time has passed. We expect to see him back, especially given the urgent work required in a troubled nation like ours.”
Obi highlighted the significant hardship inflicted on citizens by the administration’s policies, calling for the President’s immediate attention to help navigate the country out of its current predicament.
He further criticized the decision for Shettima to represent Tinubu at a working visit to Sweden, suggesting that it would have been more fiscally responsible for the President to make the trip himself from France. Obi noted that the direct flight from Paris to Stockholm is just 833 nautical miles, a distance that could be covered in about two hours, compared to the longer route Shettima had to take.
“This delegation does not reflect the fiscal responsibility expected of leaders in a country grappling with limited resources,” Obi remarked. “This is a crucial time for true leadership, prioritizing the welfare of citizens and effectively managing the nation’s scarce resources to alleviate their suffering. A New Nigeria is possible.
