2.The federal government has officially ended fuel and foreign exchange subsidies, a long-debated policy change. Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, announced this during the Nigeria Development Update presentation by the World Bank in Abuja on October 17.
3.The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State for November 8, 2025, in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement during a meeting with political party leaders, stating that a formal notice will be published on November 13, 2024.
4.The World Bank has cautioned that reversing the federal government’s economic policies could have dire consequences for Nigeria. Dr. Ndiame Diop, the World Bank’s Country Director for Nigeria, issued this warning during the launch of the Nigeria Development Update (NDU) report titled “Staying the Course: Progress amid Pressing Challenges” in Abuja.
5.According to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, many of the illicit weapons currently used by terrorists and bandits originated from the Federal Government. Ribadu made this statement during the Arms Destruction Exercise organized by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in Abuja on Thursday.
6.The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognized Julius Abure as the Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). INEC sent a letter to Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Secretary of the Commission, inviting them to the fourth consultative meeting with political parties on Thursday in Abuja.
7.At least three individuals were injured following an explosion of a CNG-powered vehicle at a NIPCO filling station in Benin City, Edo State. The incident occurred Thursday morning at the NIPCO gas station on Aduwawa along the Benin-Auchi road in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area.
8.The Federal Government has pledged to support Jigawa State in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Majia town, site of a recent fuel tanker explosion that claimed 153 lives. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, provided this assurance during a condolence visit to the state on Thursday.
9.Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed challenged the World Bank on its assertion that a reversal of the federal government’s economic reforms would be catastrophic for Nigeria, arguing that the reforms are ineffective. He highlighted the widespread hunger and the precarious situation faced by people of his status.
10.The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has advised residents near riverbanks along the River Benue Basin to relocate to safer areas. NIHSA Director-General, Umar Mohammed, issued this warning, noting that water levels in the River Benue have reached flood stage due to heavy rainfall.
