Anambra State Intensifies Efforts To Hunt Down Cult-Related KillersThe Anambra State Government has pledged to pursue those responsible for the recent cult-related killings in the Nibo community of Awka South Local Government Area, which left at least 13 people dead. The tragic incident occurred during the community’s New Yam festival, known as the ‘Nibo onwa asaa’ festival, when armed individuals, suspected to be cultists, attacked a gathering near Oye Nwochichi Market.

Reports indicate that the attackers arrived in a Lexus 300 jeep and opened fire on festival-goers, killing eight people instantly before moving to another location with additional casualties.

In a statement issued on Monday, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, confirmed that the government is aware of the incident and has initiated actions to apprehend those responsible.

“The Anambra State Government is aware of the deaths from the alleged cult-related violence in Nibo on October 20, 2024,” Mefor stated. “This is yet another example of the violent crimes associated with cults, and the government is committed to eradicating such acts.”

He extended condolences to the families of the victims and assured them that the government would thoroughly investigate the incident and hold the culprits accountable.

To aid in this effort, the government is encouraging the public to share any information that could lead to the arrest of the offenders, assuring confidentiality and a potential reward for useful tips. Mefor urged law-abiding citizens to continue their daily activities without fear, as the government collaborates with security forces to address the situation. He also mentioned that hotlines would be provided for reporting relevant information.
