A Federal High Court sitting at the Audu Bako Secretariat in Kano State has ordered the remand of Sadiq Zubairu, accused of abducting and murdering his friend, Bello Bukar, a 45-year-old staff member of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).
Zubairu, 35, from Hotoron Arewa Quarters in Nassarawa Local Government Area, reportedly admitted to conspiring with two accomplices, who are still at large, to kill Bello over a debt of N3 million. This money had been given to Zubairu by Bello under the pretext that he would secure a better job for him at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Zubairu further confessed to stealing Bello’s two mobile phones and hiding his vehicle, valued at N12 million, in a garage in Hotoro Quarters, Kano, which has since been recovered by the police.
Charged with armed robbery and murder, Zubairu pleaded not guilty. The case was presented by Barrister Abdussalam Dan Maidaki.
The presiding judge, Justice Yusuf Ubale Muhammad, ordered Zubairu’s remand and adjourned the case to January 23, 2025, for witness testimony.
According to reports, Bello was last seen on Sunday, May 5, 2024, when he left home but never returned. His body was later discovered in Kumbotso Local Government Area. Bello’s younger brother, Abdullahi Abubakar, explained that his brother had received an urgent call from Zubairu, who was a close confidant and former colleague.
Kano State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, revealed that Zubairu had taken N3 million from Bello, promising to secure him a job. However, when he failed to return the money, Zubairu allegedly hired two men to help him kill Bello.
