Saraki, Muftwang, And North-Central Stakeholders Call For PDP Chairmanship SlotFormer Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang, and other prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders from the North-Central zone have called for the party’s National Chairmanship position to be returned to their region in order to complete its tenure.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The PDP chieftains made this demand in a communiqué issued after a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday. The meeting brought together key figures such as Governor Caleb Muftwang, former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, and former governors Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Jonah Jang (Plateau), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), and Idris Wada (Kogi), along with the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), among others.
The call comes amid ongoing internal divisions within the PDP, which have been worsened by the aftermath of the 2023 general elections. The party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has faced criticism for failing to address these issues, further weakening the PDP’s position. Damagum took over after the court ousted former Chairman Iyorchia Ayu for failing to implement necessary reforms.
During the meeting, North-Central PDP leaders insisted that the National Chairmanship position should be returned to their region to complete its term. They also emphasized the importance of unity and peace within the party for its future success, urging all stakeholders to work toward building a consensus.
The communiqué read, “The stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party reviewed the state of the party, particularly the vacant position of National Chairman following Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s exit. The PDP constitution clearly states that any vacant position at the national level should be filled by an appointment from the region, in line with Section 47 (6) of the party’s constitution.”
The statement further stressed the need for party leadership to make sacrifices and compromises in order to restore goodwill and cohesion. “It is in this context that the North-Central Zone stakeholders appeal to the conscience and goodwill of our counterparts in other regions to restore the Chairmanship position to North-Central to serve out its term. North-Central remains united and committed to preserving the PDP as a strong platform for good governance in Nigeria.
