Speaking to reporters at his residence in Iyamho, Estako West Local Government Area, Oshiomhole accused the council chairmen of financial mismanagement, alleging they funneled large sums of money to the former governor, Godwin Obaseki.
Oshiomhole stated, “It’s already clear that there’s a new leadership in town. He is stopping the bad practices and ending the financial drain that Edo was enduring.”
“It’s no secret that local government councils were sending large sums of money to the former governor, and now, this administration says, ‘stop,’” Oshiomhole added. “We want the funds to be used for local development.”
On December 17, 2024, the Edo State House of Assembly suspended all 18 local government chairmen and their deputies for two months, citing allegations of insubordination and misconduct. The suspension followed a petition from Governor Monday Okpebholo, who accused the council executives of failing to submit financial account statements to the state government.
In a related development, Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, issued a statement on Friday commending the governor’s performance in his first month in office. The statement, shared in Benin City, highlighted Oshiomhole’s approval of Okpebholo’s practical approach to governance.
Oshiomhole noted that Edo residents could now “experience real governance” after eight years of Obaseki’s rhetoric and memoranda of understanding (MOUs).
