Mahadi Shehu Behind Bars: Court Sends Him To Kaduna Prison Over Fake Video
Kaduna-based public commentator Mahdi Shehu has been remanded in a Kaduna prison following his arraignment on Tuesday at the Chief Magistrate’s Court on Ibrahim Taiwo Road.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Shehu faces two charges: conspiracy, aiding and abetting terrorism, in violation of Section 26 (2)(3) of the Terrorism (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022, and inciting public disturbances, contrary to Section 78 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017.
The charges stem from a post Shehu made on his X account, suggesting that the Federal Government was planning to establish a French military base in Nigeria’s North-East, a claim reportedly made by Niger Republic’s military leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani. This allegation was later refuted by the Nigerian government.
After a thorough fact-check by credible media outlets, it was confirmed that the video Shehu referenced actually showed Nigerian soldiers at Bamako Airport during an ECOWAS peacekeeping mission in Northern Mali in 2013, not a military installation as he suggested.
Shehu was arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS) and subsequently arraigned after a detailed investigation. Magistrate Abubakar Lamido ordered Shehu’s remand in prison custody, with the case adjourned to January 14, 2025, for further hearings.
