In a bold step towards reshaping Nigeria’s developmental trajectory, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Regional Development in October 2024. This forward-thinking initiative is designed to elevate the coordination and oversight of Nigeria’s regional development commissions, such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), North East Development Commission (NEDC), South East Development Commission (SEDC) and South West development Commission (SWDC) .
The Ministry’s core mission is to drive inclusive, sustainable growth across Nigeria’s diverse regions by ensuring balanced development and efficient resource allocation.
The Ministry of Regional Development is entrusted with the formulation, coordination, and implementation of policies, programs, and initiatives aimed at accelerating socio-economic growth within Nigeria’s regions. By consolidating the efforts of various regional development bodies, the Ministry intends to streamline operations, eliminate inefficiencies, and ensure that critical resources are directed to areas with the highest developmental needs.
Guiding this pivotal transformation is Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, a seasoned engineer and politician whose career spans decades of public service. Holding a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Benin and the University of Lagos, respectively, alongside a Master’s in Public Administration from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Engr. Momoh’s qualifications reflect a profound expertise in both engineering and public administration. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and the Institute of Public Administration of Nigeria.
Engr. Momoh’s extensive experience includes notable leadership roles as a Councilor, Local Government Chairman, Edo State House of Assembly Member, and Honourable Member of the House of Representatives. His track record in advancing infrastructure development and regional growth positions him uniquely to lead the Ministry as it embarks on this monumental journey.
Under Engr. Momoh’s visionary leadership, the Ministry of Regional Development is primed for several game-changing initiatives in 2025:
Infrastructure Enhancement: A strategic focus will be placed on accelerating the completion of critical infrastructure projects that will improve connectivity and stimulate economic activities across regions.
