Lagos GAC Backs Meranda, Officially Approves Obasa’s Impeachment

This follows Monday’s impeachment of former Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa by 32 lawmakers over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. In his place, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda (Apapa 1) was unanimously elected as the new Speaker, marking a historic moment as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
According to Western Post, the GAC fully supported the lawmakers’ decision to remove Obasa and endorsed Meranda’s leadership.
Addressing journalists after the Assembly’s meeting with the GAC, Meranda stated that the visit was to seek the council’s blessings, which were gladly given. She added that the Assembly members were pleased with the GAC’s support for the transition.
The impeachment of Obasa stemmed from allegations of financial misconduct and statutory violations. Before her election as Speaker, Meranda served as the Assembly’s Chief Whip and Deputy Speaker.
In a related development, the Conference 57 of Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen in Lagos State congratulated Meranda on her election. In a statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Alabi Kolade David, and Public Relations Officer, Olusesan Daini, they commended Meranda’s competence, dedication, and commitment to service. The group noted that her emergence reflects Lagos State’s commitment to progressive ideals and inclusive governance.
The Council Chairmen pledged their full support and collaboration with the new Speaker to ensure a successful tenure marked by robust legislative leadership, developmental strides, and adherence to democratic principles.
