On Monday, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde officially presented the staff of office to Owoade as the Alaafin-designate. However, the Atiba 9 criticized the governor for allegedly disregarding the customary and legal procedures governing the selection of the revered throne.

Speaking on behalf of the families, Prince Sina Afolabi issued a statement on Tuesday, accusing Governor Makinde of basing the decision on a controversial proclamation by Prof. Wande Abimbola, a U.S.-based Awise Agbaye, who purportedly claimed that Ifa had chosen Owoade.

“The appointment of Abimbola Owoade contradicts the deeply-rooted customs, culture, and traditions of Oyo and represents a breach of the rule of law,” Afolabi stated.

The nine princes—Prince Remi Azeez (Tella Okitipapa), Prince Lamola Olanite (Olanite), Prince Agboin Adelabu (Adelabu), Prince Raji Adeniran (Adeniran), Prince Nureni Taiwo (Tella Agbojulogun), Prince Muftau Adejare Adesokan (Adesokan Baba Idode), Prince Adesiyan (Adesiyan), and Prince Bello Rasheed (Abidekun)—asserted their legitimate claims to the throne. They argued that the selection process leading to Owoade’s appointment undermined the integrity of the Alaafin’s stool.

“Our objection is not personal against Owoade or Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, another earlier-chosen contestant by the Oyomesi. The issue lies with the flawed process that disregarded the ancient traditions of Oyo,” Afolabi explained.

The Atiba 9 revealed they have initiated legal action to challenge the selection processes that led to the emergence of both Owoade and Gbadegesin as contenders. They vowed to uphold the sanctity of the royal institution through adherence to due process.

“Governor Makinde, despite his public advocacy for due process, has endorsed a fundamentally flawed procedure,” Afolabi concluded.
