On Friday, March 21, the Supreme Court ruled in Anyanwu’s favor, officially declaring him the rightful PDP National Secretary, thereby settling the legal dispute over the position.
In its judgment on Appeal No: SC/CV/18/2025 – Senator Samuel Anyanwu v. Aniagu Emmanuel – the apex court overturned an earlier appellate court ruling that had recognized his opponent, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, as the legitimate officeholder.
Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Tukur Yammaman stated that the trial court in Enugu, which initially ruled against Anyanwu, lacked jurisdiction over the case, rendering its verdict null and void.
Furthermore, the court ruled that the plaintiff, Aniagu Emmanuel, had no legal standing to initiate the case that led to Anyanwu’s removal. It emphasized that Aniagu failed to demonstrate how he was directly affected by Anyanwu’s tenure. As a result, the court labeled Aniagu a “meddlesome interloper” and dismissed the case for lack of jurisdiction.
Speaking to journalists after the ruling, Anyanwu downplayed the dispute, describing it as a family matter that has now been resolved.
“I am here to continue my work as National Secretary of the party until the next commission takes over in December 2025,” he stated.
The legal battle between Anyanwu and Udeh-Okoye intensified after Anyanwu contested the Imo State governorship election, leading to a prolonged leadership tussle within the party.
