Nwosu, who formerly served as Chief of Staff to ex-Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, shared his concerns during a virtual media interaction.

His comments were a response to a call made on Friday by former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung, activist Omoyele Sowore, and other members of the Coalition of Nigerian Patriots, who advocated for granting citizens the right to bear arms for self-defense.

Disagreeing with this stance, Nwosu argued that arming citizens would not solve the security challenges in volatile regions.

He said, “I don’t support encouraging citizens to carry arms because it would turn the country into a lawless society.

“Instead, the government should deploy more security personnel to the affected areas to restore peace. If individuals are allowed to carry weapons, it could lead to chaos, as anger or emotional outbursts might prompt rash actions.

“Moreover, many of these bandits come from outside the communities they attack. They invade, commit their crimes, and retreat. This is why I also recommend strengthening community policing efforts. Authorities must have the courage to engage at the grassroots level, even though it’s one of the most challenging aspects of governance.”
