Makinde Under Fire: APC Blasts N63.5bn Government House Renovation As Reckless Waste

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned Governor Seyi Makinde’s plan to spend ₦63.5 billion on renovating the Government House, describing it as a wasteful use of public funds.

In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare, and made available to the APC criticised the decision, saying it reflects disregard for the people’s needs.

The opposition party pointed out that the late former Governor Abiola Ajimobi had already renovated the Government House before leaving office in 2019, questioning the necessity of another major renovation so soon.

“We have observed, like many concerned Nigerians at home and abroad, the widespread condemnation of Governor Makinde’s obsession with financial recklessness and misdirected priorities,” the statement read.

The APC also recalled how their previous warnings about questionable expenditures—such as the 2019 production of exercise books reportedly costing ₦2,100 per copy—were ignored, yet similar concerns are now being raised by broader segments of society.

“Governor Makinde has offered no convincing justification for spending tens of billions on refurbishing structures that were originally built to endure for decades and were tastefully renovated just a few years ago,” the party stated.

They concluded by accusing the governor of using his recent address to the Oyo State House of Assembly as a smokescreen to obscure what they allege is corruption and impunity in the state’s financial dealings.
