SDP In Turmoil: National Chairman Gabam, Top Officials Suspended With Immediate Effect

According to a statement released on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the suspensions stem from serious allegations of financial misconduct, including embezzlement, misappropriation, and diversion of party funds.
Aiyenigba emphasized that the disciplinary action was necessary to enable a comprehensive investigation into the alleged wrongdoing.
In the meantime, Deputy National Chairman (North), Sadiq Umar Abubakar, has assumed the role of Acting National Chairman, in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution.
The suspension of the officials has been formally communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities.
The statement added:
“This decision was reached following a resolution by members of the NWC after compelling evidence emerged, linking the suspended individuals to unauthorized financial transactions, self-enrichment activities, and unapproved withdrawals from party accounts.
The scandal came to light when it was discovered that the National Chairman submitted an unauthorized financial report to INEC, which was subsequently published in national newspapers.
Upon learning of the anomaly, the NWC resolved to report the fraudulent practices to the appropriate law enforcement bodies.”
Aiyenigba further stressed that the party’s firm action is a testament to its zero-tolerance stance on corruption, reaffirming SDP’s image as a disciplined and credible political alternative in Nigeria.
An interim investigative panel has been established to audit all financial transactions and recommend necessary disciplinary or legal steps moving forward.
