General Christopher Gwabin Musa expressed his full support for the proposed bill on early voting when he received Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to a statement by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Media Operations, the senator’s visit was to formally inform the military leadership about the bill currently before the National Assembly.
Senator Yar’adua, working in collaboration with a civil society group, explained that the bill aims to tackle the disenfranchisement of over two million security personnel and essential duty workers who were unable to vote during the last general elections due to deployment.
“This legislation is designed to ensure these critical personnel can cast their votes ahead of the general elections, without jeopardizing national security or the integrity of the electoral process,” Yar’adua stated, also inviting the Defence Headquarters to contribute to the upcoming public hearing.
He also mentioned a second bill, which proposes a sustainable and alternative funding structure for the Nigerian Armed Forces. The bill, having passed its second reading in the Senate, will also be subject to a public hearing where the senator requested the military’s input.
In response, General Musa thanked Senator Yar’adua for sponsoring what he described as two vital and timely legislative proposals.
“The Defence Headquarters fully supports these initiatives. We are prepared to engage actively in the public hearings and contribute meaningfully to ensure the bills’ success,” the CDS affirmed.
He reiterated the military’s commitment to democratic progress and national security, emphasizing the importance of empowering service members and boosting operational capacity through sound legislation.
