Holy Ground Violated: Police React Swiftly As Gunmen Kidnap Catholic Seminarians In Edo
The Edo State Police Command has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical units to Agenebode in Etsako East Local Government Area to rescue three abducted seminarians.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The teams, comprising operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping and Intelligence Units, were mobilised following an attack on the Immaculate Conception Junior Seminary in Ivianokpodi on July 10, 2025, around 9 p.m.
In the assault, suspected kidnappers stormed the seminary, abducted three seminarians, and killed a personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), identified as Chris Awenegiemhe—one of three NSCDC officers assigned to the school.
In a statement issued in Benin City on Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, confirmed the tactical deployment, noting that the units will work in collaboration with other security agencies, vigilantes, and local hunters to ensure the safe return of the abducted students and the arrest of the perpetrators.
Yamu said that the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, gave the directive during his visit to the crime scene on Friday. The visit, he explained, was to evaluate the situation, console the affected community, and underscore the Command’s commitment to justice.
Describing the attack as a “senseless act of violence against a religious institution and innocent youths,” the Police Commissioner condemned it as both barbaric and a direct threat to public peace and safety.
“The Command extends its condolences to the family of the slain NSCDC officer, the NSCDC leadership, the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, and the families of the abducted seminarians during this difficult time,” Yamu added.
He reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property, vowing that the perpetrators will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice.
The public was also urged to remain calm and assist ongoing efforts with timely and credible information that could aid the rescue mission.
